We have spoken previously about Staging Environments for website development, and their importance. If you’d like to know more check out Staging Website, Why Use One for more. Since then, many people have asked us about setting up a staging website on their laptop and about accessing their staging website. So this blog will give a quick guide for How to set up and access a staging website on Mac, and how to set up a staging website on Windows.

Why is this important, why can’t you just type in staging.YOURSITE.com and see your staging site? To answer this simply, a staging website is designed to be private so only the key stakeholders who are involved in developing the new website can see some of the proposed changes, and make alterations before publishing to the general public.

A staging website will usually be set up using A Records. This means you’ll have an IP associated with your domain. This pair would look something like:

189.101.99.100  staging.YOURSITE.com

To see the staging site, you need to add this information to your host file. For novices and beginners, this can seem like a daunting task as you will be using terminal, maybe even for the first time.

This blog will detail the adding of the staging environment to your Laptop/PC’s Host file in a step by step manner. We hope this will answer your questions on How to add a staging site to a Mac and How to add a staging site to a Windows PC.
